One of the highlights for the Wanderers Wahine, on its nine-day cricket trip to the North Island, was taking on another Wanderers side.
The Brightwater-based team fundraised for a year to get to the girls 1st X1 tournament in Hawke’s Bay.
They played four 20-over matches ,winning two, losing one, and also recording a draw.
“Unfortunately, we ran out of time for a super over to decide that game,” says team manager Jo Cotton, who was delighted with her side’s sixth-placed finish out of 12 sides at the tournament.
One of the wins came against the Wellington Wanderers at Frimley Park in Hastings.
The Wanderers Wahine batted first and posted 118/4 with Petra Cederman top scoring with 43, and they then bowled out Wellington for 86 with Caitlin Whiting taking 3/15.
A special mention, too, for vice-captain Biddy Thomas who played with a broken fibula in her lower leg.
Before the tournament started, the girls, aged 14 to 18, spent a day at the Central Districts cricket hub experiencing what a day in the life of a CD cricketer would be like.
There were also insights from Hinds allrounder Hannah Rowe who soon after was recalled to the White Ferns squad, as an injury replacement, for the cricket world cup.
The Wahine Wanderers then headed to Taupo for two days of R and R with jetboating, lake swimming and a trip to the themed Huka Prawn Park.
Then it was back to cricket with a final game planned for Palmerston North on the way home.
