Hockey was the big winner when Nelson College announced its annual sports award.
1st XI captain Scott Brown was named sportsman of the year, heading off his rugby and basketball counterparts.
He led the team to finish fifth in the secondary school showpiece, the Rankin Cup in Auckland. It was the first time since 1997 that NC had reached the last eight at the national tournament.
Scott shared the Sports Masters Cup for Contribution to Sport and Recreation with his hockey and cricket teammate Kurt Ward. He also starred in middle distance running, from 800m, 1500m and 3000m through to cross country.
