Dogs, cats, goats, rabbits and even the occasional piglet are expected to join worshippers at Nelson Cathedral next month for its annual pet blessing service.
The service, which begins at 10am on Sunday, 6 September, invites people to bring along their animals for a special blessing celebrating pets and God’s creatures.
Last year, dogs outnumbered people, highlighting Nelson’s strong canine community. Previous services have also featured working sheepdogs, goats, worms, rabbits, a kunekune piglet and puppies.
Cathedral precentor Rev Steve Jordan says the wide range of visitors has never caused problems.
“Maybe it’s something to do with the unusual surroundings inside the cathedral, or maybe they pick up on the importance of the occasion, but despite the wide array of animals and birds we get through the doors, we’ve never had any problems.”
The 45-minute service will include hymns, prayers and readings focused on animals and creation.
Each pet attending will have the opportunity to receive a blessing.
The annual event is inspired by the tradition of St Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals.
