Nelson apprentice Caleb Scott has placed second in the Central & Upper South Island 2026 Master Builders CARTERS Apprentice of the Year competition.
Caleb, who works for Big Bad Wolf Builders, impressed judges with a submission that reflected his enthusiasm for the trade and the pride he takes in his work.
His Savill Bay project was presented with strong technical detail, demonstrating a clear understanding of the build process from set-out and excavation through to flooring and framing.
Judges also highlighted Caleb's example of health and safety leadership, saying it showed he was willing to take responsibility on site.
Across New Zealand, 95 apprentices from nine regions took part in the 2026 regional competition. Each apprentice submitted a detailed overview of a building project they were working on before completing a two-hour practical challenge. Competitors were required to build a project box that was revealed on the morning of the competition.
The top 10 regional competitors then faced an interview with the judging panel and an on-site assessment of their project. They were tested on their technical knowledge, communication skills, project involvement and wider industry understanding.
During the site visit and interview, Caleb presented confidently and answered questions well. Judges said his industry knowledge made a particularly strong impression and demonstrated his potential within the trade.
In the practical challenge, Caleb carefully reviewed the plans and followed an effective sequence of work to complete the project to a high standard.
"Caleb has a very promising building career ahead of him," judges said.
Caleb trained through Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT).
Christchurch builder Dokyun Kim was named the regional winner, while Marlborough apprentice William Farnsworth placed third.
