Two people have been found dead following a serious firearms incident in Nelson on Friday afternoon.
Police say they were first alerted just before 12pm to the alleged theft of a shotgun from a store in Annesbrook.
The alleged offender left the area in a vehicle before officers arrived.
A short time later, police were called to a firearms incident on Parkers Road, where a man and a woman were found deceased.
Nelson Mayor Nick Smith says he was briefed by police on Friday afternoon and that the alleged theft happened at Hunting & Fishing at Nelson Junction.
"The alarm was raised when a shotgun was stolen from Hunting & Fishing in Quarantine Rd and then the offender has gone on to Parkers Rd where the tragedy occured."
Acting Tasman District Commander Superintendent Blair Macdonald says initial enquiries suggest the two people were known to each other.
Police are providing support to the victims' loved ones.
"I can reassure the public that this was an isolated incident and there is no ongoing risk to public safety."
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
As part of enquiries, officers are also at a property on Sanctuary Drive in Stoke.
Cordons have been established in the Quarantine Road, Parkers Road and Sanctuary Drive areas, with scene guards in place.
Members of the public are being asked to avoid those areas, while nearby residents can expect an increased police presence over the coming days.
Access to Nelson Airport remains available via Bolt Road.
Hato Hone St John responded an ambulance and an operations manager to the scene.
Police say the incident was deeply distressing for members of the community and support is being provided to those who witnessed events unfold.
Police are not seeking anyone else in relation to the incident.
