Farmers and growers across the Top of the South will have a chance to step away from the daily pressures of the season and hear a message of resilience from Victoria Cross recipient Willie Apiata VC next month.
The former soldier is bringing the Rural Support Trust’s ‘I’m good... are you?’ well-being series to Upper Moutere and Renwick, with organisers hoping the events provide a timely boost for rural communities facing ongoing challenges.
Top of the South Rural Support Trust regional coordinator Sarah White says many people in the sector are under pressure. “Viticulture is going through some tough times at the moment and that has a considerable impact on Marlborough,” she says.
“Those in Nelson and Tasman have also had some really challenging times following the extensive flooding last year, and now we are looking ahead to another summer with a strengthening El Niño adding further uncertainty for farmers and growers.”
Sarah says the impact of difficult markets, extreme weather and financial stress extends well beyond farm gates and vineyard rows.
“We’re very mindful that these pressures affect not only owners and their families, but staff, contractors, rural professionals and the wider service community as well.
“That is why opportunities to bring people together are so important.”
A recent financial workshop reinforced the value of connection. Sarah recalls a grower telling her the best part of attending was discovering others were facing similar challenges.
“He told me one of the things he enjoyed most about the workshop was realising other people were going through the same issues,” she says.
During the events, Willie will share lessons from his own experiences and speak about mental wellbeing, resilience and the importance of supporting those around you.
“One of the messages Willie conveys is recognising that no one gets through the hard times alone and understanding the importance of looking after the people around you,” Sarah says.
The free events are part of a nationwide Rural Support Trust initiative aimed at strengthening connections and supporting the wellbeing of people working in farming, horticulture, viticulture, forestry and other rural industries.
