Whether for conservation or cuisine, there are not many people who would protest to having more whitebait in our rivers. Motueka South School’s Room 4, as well as students from its Enviro Group, spent some time at the Woodlands canal late last month, working on the enhancement of the local īnanga/ whitebait spawning site.
Caz Gray, who delivers the Whitebait Connection programme on behalf of Tasman Bay Guardians, says the students have been learning about our native whitebait species this year and want to help improve the places for whitebait to lay their eggs.
She reckons the plantings will provide protection for the adult īnanga as well as suitable vegetation for spawning. “The end goal is more whitebait in our waterways – something we’re sure everyone will be happy about,” she says.
