Touch players are gearing up to roll ball on another busy season in Motueka and Riwaka, with registrations for the popular Thursday night competition closing this Friday.
A 10-person committee is busy preparing for the season, counting balls, checking field markings and recruiting referees ahead of the first games on Thursday, 15 October.
Committee member Caz Gray says player numbers have grown steadily since the competition resumed after Covid-19, with close to 300 athletes typically taking part across men’s, women’s, mixed and youth grades.
The women’s grade is a standout feature of the competition.
Caz says that it is the only touch tournament in the Tasman district to offer a separate women’s grade, highlighting the depth of local talent.
The final make-up of grades will depend on registration numbers, but children as young as Year Three can take part.
The mixed development grade provides another option for younger players looking for extra game time. Designed for primary school-aged children through to Year Eight, each team includes one adult on the field to help with structure and flow.
Players who have not managed to join a team before registration are encouraged to head to the fields on gameday to see if any sides are looking for extra numbers. Although teams need to be registered by Friday, players can be added in the coming weeks.
Having been involved in touch for many years, Caz says that one of the sport’s biggest strengths is its ability to bring generations together.
“It’s a game the whole family can play together.”
The social side of the competition is also a major drawcard, with players often heading to the clubrooms after games to dissect the evening’s action over a cold drink.
This season, the committee hopes to establish a game-day hub at the Riwaka cemetery fields, the second venue used each Thursday night. The hub will provide a central base for gear, first aid kits and playing draws under a gazebo.
